Add the berries and water to a small saucepan over medium heat.
Cook for 5–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries soften and release their juices.
Lightly mash the berries with a fork or potato masher.
Stir in the chia seeds, maple syrup or date syrup (if using) and lemon juice.
Remove from heat and let the mixture sit for about 10–15 minutes to thicken.
Serve on whole grain or gluten-free toast or crackers.
