Detox teas, juice cleanses and fasting programs are everywhere, all promising hormone balance, weight loss and a “reset.” But during menopause, these approaches can often do more harm than good.
Many detoxes are extremely low in calories, protein and carbohydrates, which can stress the body and spike cortisol. When stress hormones rise, symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disruption, mood swings and stubborn weight gain often get worse, not better. Laxative-style detox teas can also dehydrate you and disrupt minerals your body needs for hormone balance.
Your liver already does an incredible job detoxing when it’s properly nourished. What it truly needs during menopause is steady fuel, regular meals, enough carbohydrates, plant-based protein, fiber and hydration. Supporting blood sugar and reducing stress is far more effective than restriction.
Instead of “cleansing,” focus on nourishing. Eating consistently, choosing whole foods and honoring your body’s changing needs will support hormones far better than any quick fix.
Gentle, sustainable care always wins, especially in this season of life.

I started out over 10 years ago watching Forks Over Knives, decided to “try out” the plant-based meal plan and had shockingly incredible results. I’ve never turned back. I have lost nearly 50 pounds, and that is just one side effect that me, my family, friends and clients have experienced after making the change.
Having been an incredible cook my entire adult life, I started my own personal chef service, NuYu Nourish, to extend my help to others. I interned under a celebrity chef, became a celebrity chef myself and have been expanding my reach and goals ever since! My plan follows strictly and simply those of Dr. Mcdougall, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn.
