Here’s a little kitchen trick that can make a familiar staple taste completely different, toast your grains before cooking them.
Before adding water or broth, place your dry quinoa or rice in a dry saucepan and toast them briefly over medium heat, stirring often. You’ll start to notice a warm, nutty aroma as the grains lightly toast.
Then add your cooking liquid and continue cooking as you normally would.
It only takes a few extra minutes, but that simple step can bring out a deeper, nuttier flavor and add another layer of taste to your meal.
Try it the next time you’re making quinoa or rice and see if you notice the difference!
Have you ever toasted your grains before cooking?

I started out over a decade ago watching Forks Over Knives, decided to “try out” the plant-based meal plan and had shockingly incredible results. I’ve never turned back. I have lost nearly 50 pounds, and that is just one side effect that me, my family, friends and clients have experienced after making the change.
Having been an incredible cook my entire adult life, I started my own personal chef service, NuYu Nourish, to extend my help to others. I interned under a celebrity chef, became a celebrity chef myself and have been expanding my reach and goals ever since! My plan follows strictly and simply those of Dr. Mcdougall, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn.
