For this Wellness Wednesday, I want to share one small technique I use all the time that makes plant-based cooking more flavorful without adding oil or extra ingredients.
Before cooking grains like quinoa, brown rice or barley, I always toast them briefly in a dry pan. Just 1–2 minutes brings out a natural, nutty flavor that makes the finished dish taste richer and more satisfying.
How to do it:
- Heat a dry pan over medium heat
- Add rinsed grains
- Stir for 1–2 minutes until fragrant
- Add water and cook as usual
That’s it. This tiny step builds depth naturally, so you don’t need heavy sauces or extra salt to make simple foods taste great.
Want to try this for yourself? Hit reply and I’ll walk you through it.

I started out over 10 years ago watching Forks Over Knives, decided to “try out” the plant-based meal plan and had shockingly incredible results. I’ve never turned back. I have lost nearly 50 pounds, and that is just one side effect that me, my family, friends and clients have experienced after making the change.
Having been an incredible cook my entire adult life, I started my own personal chef service, NuYu Nourish, to extend my help to others. I interned under a celebrity chef, became a celebrity chef myself and have been expanding my reach and goals ever since! My plan follows strictly and simply those of Dr. Mcdougall, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn.
