July brings one of summer’s sweetest treasures, Black Mission figs. With their deep purple skin, naturally sweet flavor and rich, jam-like texture, they’re a delicious fruit to enjoy while they’re in season.
Originally cultivated in the Mediterranean and later introduced to California by Spanish missionaries, Black Mission figs have become one of the most popular fig varieties in the United States. Their naturally rich flavor makes them wonderful enjoyed fresh on their own, sliced into grain salads, paired with leafy greens or served alongside nuts for a simple plant-based snack.
Because their season is relatively short, now is the perfect time to pick up a basket at your local farmers market or grocery store. Fresh, ripe figs are one of those special seasonal treats that remind us to enjoy nature’s harvest while it’s here.
Have you ever tasted fresh Black Mission figs?

I started out over a decade ago watching Forks Over Knives, decided to “try out” the plant-based meal plan and had shockingly incredible results. I’ve never turned back. I have lost nearly 50 pounds, and that is just one side effect that me, my family, friends and clients have experienced after making the change.
Having been an incredible cook my entire adult life, I started my own personal chef service, NuYu Nourish, to extend my help to others. I interned under a celebrity chef, became a celebrity chef myself and have been expanding my reach and goals ever since! My plan follows strictly and simply those of Dr. Mcdougall, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn.
