Many women turn to hormone replacement therapy (HRT), pills, patches or injections, for quick relief from hot flashes, night sweats or mood changes. While HRT can work fast, large trials show that certain forms and longer durations of HRT are linked to higher risks (heart disease, blood clots, stroke and breast cancer) for some women.
By contrast, clinical evidence and decades of work from physicians like Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Neal Barnard, T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn show that whole-food, plant-based diets can ease symptoms and improve long-term health, without the drug-linked tradeoffs. In short, HRT provides short-term relief but may carry long-term side effects, while a plant-based lifestyle offers both immediate benefits and long-range health gains.
