One of the easiest ways to add incredible flavor to your meals is with fresh citrus zest. The colorful outer peel of lemons, limes and oranges contains fragrant natural oils that can brighten recipes without adding extra fat or heavy seasonings.
A little zest goes a long way. Sprinkle it over roasted vegetables, stir it into soups, mix it into whole grains, beans or homemade dressings or add it to fresh fruit for a burst of vibrant flavor. It’s a simple kitchen trick that can make everyday meals taste fresh and exciting.
When zesting citrus, use only the colorful outer layer and avoid the white pith underneath, which can taste bitter.
Next time you reach for a lemon, lime or orange, don’t throw away all that wonderful flavor hiding in the peel!
How do you like to use fresh citrus zest in your kitchen?

I started out over a decade ago watching Forks Over Knives, decided to “try out” the plant-based meal plan and had shockingly incredible results. I’ve never turned back. I have lost nearly 50 pounds, and that is just one side effect that me, my family, friends and clients have experienced after making the change.
Having been an incredible cook my entire adult life, I started my own personal chef service, NuYu Nourish, to extend my help to others. I interned under a celebrity chef, became a celebrity chef myself and have been expanding my reach and goals ever since! My plan follows strictly and simply those of Dr. Mcdougall, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn.
