For this week’s Wellness Wednesday, I’m highlighting papaya, a sweet, vibrant tropical fruit native to southern Mexico and Central America that is now grown throughout tropical regions around the world. Surprisingly, it’s also very easy to prepare.
Papaya is naturally rich in vitamin C, vitamin A and antioxidants and it contains an enzyme called papain that helps support digestion. Its bright color is a sign of beneficial plant compounds that help support overall wellness.
Choose a papaya that is mostly yellow and slightly soft to the touch. Slice it in half lengthwise and scoop out the black seeds with a spoon. You can peel the skin with a knife or simply scoop out the flesh, then slice or cube it for easy use.
Simple ways to enjoy it:
- Add cubes to salads
- Serve alongside grilled vegetables or tofu
- Mix into fruit bowls or breakfast oats
- Squeeze a little lime or lemon over fresh slices for a bright snack
Tip: If fresh papaya isn’t available, you can often find frozen papaya year-round, which works well in chilled fruit bowls.

I started out over 10 years ago watching Forks Over Knives, decided to “try out” the plant-based meal plan and had shockingly incredible results. I’ve never turned back. I have lost nearly 50 pounds, and that is just one side effect that me, my family, friends and clients have experienced after making the change.
Having been an incredible cook my entire adult life, I started my own personal chef service, NuYu Nourish, to extend my help to others. I interned under a celebrity chef, became a celebrity chef myself and have been expanding my reach and goals ever since! My plan follows strictly and simply those of Dr. Mcdougall, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn.
