Nature has an incredible way of protecting many of the foods we enjoy with perfect packaging. Beyond the obvious bananas, corn, avocados and more, there are some unique examples you may not have tried.

Have you ever tasted ground cherries? These small golden fruits grow inside delicate, papery husks that naturally protect them until they’re ready to eat. Native to the Americas and now grown in many regions, ground cherries have a sweet, tropical flavor that’s often described as a blend of pineapple and vanilla. Simply peel back the husk, rinse and gently pat dry the fruit, then enjoy it fresh as a snack or add it to salads, fruit bowls or desserts.

Another great example is the tomatillo, also wrapped in its own papery husk. Once peeled and rinsed, tomatillos are commonly used in green salsas and sauces, including many served with burritos, tacos and other Mexican-inspired dishes.

Nature’s peels, husks, pods and shells do more than protect food, they remind us that some of the best packaging is already built in. It’s one more reason to be thankful for the thoughtful way nature provides for us.

All my best,
