Happy Thankful Thursday!

Let’s clear up a little kitchen mystery, Allspice doesn’t actually mean all the spices mixed together (though the name makes it sound that way!). In fact, allspice is a single berry, dried and ground, that comes from the Pimenta dioica tree, native to the Caribbean and Central America.

Why the name then? Because this one spice carries the warm, fragrant notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves all at once. Nature’s little multitasker!

Allspice shows up most often in baking, think spiced cakes, pies and cookies but it’s also used in savory dishes around the world. From Caribbean jerk seasoning to Middle Eastern stews and even some Indian curries, allspice adds depth and warmth that’s hard to replicate with anything else.

So today, I’m thankful for this tiny berry with the big name and even bigger flavor. It’s a reminder that sometimes nature does the blending for us.

Here’s to savoring the little things that spice up our lives.
